It is from here that we can really appreciate the detail of this beautiful church. Altar, choir stalls, organ on the right, and behind, the high altar, arrays of banners, saints and stained glass! The (near) nave altar is made of New Guinea cedar and was dedicated in 2005.

Just back of the pulpit behind the arch stands a small credence table, given in memory of Keith Hutton in 2005.

47. BANNERS

Banners

Those who love the pageantry of the Anglican Church have a real appreciation of the colourful banners. The banner at left from the Girls’ Friendly Society carries the text ‘Bear ye one another’s burdens and so fulfil the law of Christ’. The banner at right is from the Mothers’ Union.

The window at left shows the Transfiguration of Christ, and was given in memory of Marion Godfrey. The window at right shows St John the Evangelist, and was given in memory of John Lumsdon, Rector of the Parish 1904 – 1916. The exquisite little aumbry light was originally on the wall by the organ, serving as a gas light for the Rector’s prayer desk.

Hanging in the Chancel between the two North windows is this painting of the Last Supper by Grignaschi-after da Vinci. It was given in memory of James Francis Cudmore and Margaret his wife.

50. NORTHEAST CORNER

ChancelNWall

In this corner we find the curtained aumbry where the reserved elements of the sacrament are kept, and a banner with a colourful representation of St Peter’s by the sea. Above us hangs the sanctuary lamp: these days the ‘eternal flame’ is electric.

51. A WIDER VIEW

NECorner1

As we step back from the corner we get this wider perspective with the brass candlesticks, the flowers, and a glimpse of some of the many saints and angels.

52. SANCTUARY TILES

ChancelTiling

This Church has several different tilings. These in the sanctuary are particularly appealing.

53. SAINTS: NORTH PANEL

SanctuarySaintsN

The panel at front left of the Church shows Saints of the British Church. Here we see St Alban, King Arthur, and St Patrick. St Alban was the first English martyr. I’m not sure what the Irish would have thought of the inclusion of St Patrick here!

54. REREDOS
