This next memorial reads (in very clear text!): ‘In memory of Mary Hawker, Born 1870 – Died 1945, 4th child of William Carey and Susannah Mary Faulkner of Charlton Manor Worcs. England. Wife of Walter Hawker of Anama, South Australia, 11th child of George Charles and Elizabeth Hawker of Bungaree South Australia.’

23. HAWKER MEMORIAL

GCEHawker

Yet another Hawker Memorial! This Richard Hawker is noted on the cemetery fountain outside. The text here reads: ‘In memory of Richard McDonnell Hawker, 7th son and 14th child of George Charles and Elizabeth Hawker, Born 4th May 1865, Died 24th March 1930, and his wife Adelaide Hawker, youngest daughter of Andrew and Rachel Tennant of Tallala Station, Port Lincoln, Born 22nd July 1875, Died 8th April 1952. Also Peter Seymour, their second son, Born 23rd February 1910, Died 26th March 1938.’

24. CORNER CHAIR

CornerChair

In the front corners of the nave we find a couple of celebrant’s chairs, carved in an interesting but simple Gothic style.

25. SANCTUARY

Sanctuary

Now we have arrived at the sanctuary, surrounded by a wooden altar rail and kneelers. This is where members of the congregation come to receive the Elements of the Eucharist. To the left of the altar is a small retable with a brass platten and a small wooden Bible support. In the wall behind the small altar are the three colourful lancets of the East window. On the altar is a central Cross flanked by two candles and two small brass vases.

26. EAST WINDOW

EWindow

The East window has the inscription at the base: ‘And Your Joy No Man Taketh From You’. The window is similar to the West window, but with some different symbols: star, crown, crown and cross, triangle, and chalice.

27. RETABLE AND SANCTUARY LAMP

ARetable  BSanctuaryLamp

Near the altar is a small table (retable) used for placing items during the administration of the Eucharist. On the table are a small candlestand, a platten, and a Bible support with the words: ‘To the memory of Ruth Marjorie Gault’. Died May 13th 1976. Daughter of Mary and Walter Hawker.’ A rather historic kerosene lamp hangs over the sanctuary, presumably serving in place of the more traditional sanctuary lamp. The lighting of the lamp usually indicated the presence of Blessed Elements of the Eucharist, but there is no indication of an aumbry or place for such Elements.

28. ALTAR

Altar

The altar is simply styled with a Gothic theme. Many altars support a central cross with a candlestick on either side. The outer vases are perhaps used to hold small sprays of flowers.

29. PULPIT CORNER

PulpitCorner

To the right of the altar stands a pulpit with a large memorial board behind. A small organ stands nearby.

30. PULPIT

Pulpit

The pulpit and the altar do not exactly match in their design, but each carries the pleasing Gothic arch design. It is from the pulpit that the Gospel message is preached on a Sunday.

31. MEMORIAL BOARD

HonoursRoll

This finely carved memorial board gives details of the lives and deaths of various members of the Hawker family. There is too much detail to list here, but the members of the family mentioned are: George Charles Hawker, brothers Charles Lloyd and James Collins, wife Elizabeth; John Frederic Hawker and Trevor Wynn Eyre Hawker; George Charles Hawker and Henry Colley Hawker; Isabella Hawker and Lance George Hawker. An extensive family!

32. ORGAN

Organ

This small antique organ is used to provide music for the services.

33. SOUTH WALL

SWall

We see here some detail of the South wall as seen from near the font. In fact a further Hawker family brass has been placed on this wall (see #14). [Photo Credit: conemplari1940 : Georgina Bliss]

34. NAVE SIDE WINDOW

NaveSideWindow

This is a typical nave side window with clear glass and a diagonal blue and white criss-cross pattern.

35. HAWKER BRASS PLATE

MSHawkerBrassPlate

This brass plate commemorates the life of Michael Seymour Hawker and his wife Patricia. The text reads: ‘Michael Seymour Hawker B.A. (Cantab) of North Bungaree Station. Born 5 february at Piralilla, Aldgate. Died 13 October 1986 in Clare, and his wife Patricia Monckton Hawker (née Synnot). Born 14 September 1914 in Cooma NSW, Died 10 October 1994 in Adelaide.’

36. FONT CORNER

FontCorner

We finish our tour of St Michael’s Church in the font corner. As well as the font, we see here a bookcase ofr hymn books, a framed font dedication, and a framed tapestry.

37. FONT DEDICATION

FontDedication

The text of the font dedication reads: ‘ This font is dedicated to the Glory of God and in memory of members of this Church who fell in the Great War, and in thankfulness for those who have returned. The link between those who have died and those receiving new life in baptism seems touchingly appropriate.

38. TAPESTRY

Tapestry

Also on this wall is this framed and detailed tapestry showing Jesus speaking to the blind man at the Pool of Siloam.

39. FONT

Font

The baptismal font is of simple, traditional octagonal design. The near face carries the letters ‘ihs’ – the first three letters of the name ‘JESUS’ in Greek. Around the base of the tapered octagonal wooden font cap is the text: ‘In loving memory of Edward William Hawker M.A.L.L.M.F.G.S1850–1946, Lay Reader 1918–1940.’ This completes our investigation of St Michael’s Church.
