The original section of St Augustine’s Anglican church building is one of the oldest buildings in Victor Harbor, having been completed in 1869, only seven years after the beginnings of the town.
It is built with shell-grit limestone obtained from sand hills behind the present hospital. The same stone can be seen in some of the oldest buildings in town.
It is built on land donated by Arthur Fydell Lindsay who had been an original arrival on the ‘Buffalo’ in 1836. He went on to be a prominent figure in the town and St Augustine’s for many years.
The transepts were added in 1884 on the west end of the original building (closer to what is now Burke Street) and the tower and nave were added in 1922. The original section is now the sanctuary.
