SATELLITE VIEW

Guildford Cathedral is separate from the city, and set in an open parkland. It is however within an easy (if uphill!) walking distance from the railway station.

We notice that the Cathedral axis is almost exactly in a geographical east-west direction with the Lady Chapel and sanctuary at the eastern end. This means that we can identify our geograhical and liturgical directions.

The Cathedral is cruciform in shape with a central tower, and it is the Lady Chapel which extends at the Eastern end.

The red line indicates the path of our exploration, beginning at the Western end, and circumnavigating the Cathedral in an anticlockwise direction. Special features are the café and giftshop in the Northwest corner, the strange Garth enclosures either side of the West doors, the chapter house just South of the Lady Chapel, and the Children’s Garden just across from the chapter house.

PLAN

This is the plan of the Cathedral, adapted from a Cathedral publication. We have labelled some of the princial components.

As indicated above, we shall walk right around the outside of the building before entering by the West door. We shall then explore the interior, roughly working from West to East, finishing with the Lady Chapel.
