INTRODUCTION

Over the past 18 months, I have been creating historical websites of Adelaide, North Adelaide and Port Adelaide. In each case I have walked the streets (in fact, nearly all the streets!) with my camera at the ready, enjoying and photographing the old buildings and teasing out their historical secrets. It is a hobby which has given me a great deal of pleasure.

Creating an Historic Port Fairy website has thus been a natural step to take. This project is the result of two visits. The first time I followed the ‘Port Fairy Historic Walks’ pamphlet which covers half the town. On a second visit I used the ‘Historic Buildings of Port Fairy’ booklet put out by the Port Fairy Historical Society, and filled in many of the missing gaps. The site numbering now follows that of this second booklet. An asterisk indicates an extra building I have included, and there are a couple of omissions (for example, I didn't see much historical value in photographing the highway!). The Contents list the various pages alphabetically; the page navigation arrows follow the booklet order, and would correspond to a (long) walking tour of the town.

As usual, this site makes no claim to original research. The historical text relies heavily on the excellent booklet and pamphlet mentioned above, and I gladly acknowledge this. All unacknowledged photos on this site are mine, and I am happy for them to be used by others. A simple acknowledgement and link to this site would be appreciated.

Adelaide and North Adelaide have a system in which informative blue plaques are placed on historic sites.
This is a great idea, and one which Port Fairy might consider.

I hope this site encourages others to explore Port Fairy and enjoy its past. If enough people enjoy and value the town’s history, more of the old buildings will be maintained and retained. Then our children will be able to have the same experience!

I would be happy to hear from anyone who finds a typo, a link that is not working, or an historical error.
Enjoy Port Fairy and its history with me!
