55 Hesse Street

Library

The Queenscliff Free Public Library building dates from 1888. It has a graceful entry, a colonnade across the top, and some impressive decorative features.

The Mechanics Institute library at 107 Hesse Street was sold in 1859 to finance the present building at 55 Hesse Street, Queenscliff.  Tenders were called by Joseph Watts, architect at Ryrie Street, Geelong in June 1887 and in the same month Dr David Williams JP president of the Institute laid the foundation stone.  Dr Williams was joint trustee with Charles Simpson, JP and William Sheehan Esq. The foundation stone was laid in the presence of the Mayor William Jamieson and the Town Clerk Robert Jordon.

In 1945, the librarian lived on the premises and was paid by the Library committee.  At a public meeting held in 1946, a new committee was formed to manage the library.

In 1976 the building was redesigned internally and became part of the Geelong Regional Library Service.
