BAND ROTUNDA

A central focus of Walhalla is the old band rotunda which dates from 1896. It is of architectural merit and is listed in the Victorian Heritage Register. In its early days it was a focus of the community life of the town. An inscription reads ‘Mountaineer Brass Band’ – a band which was formed in 1885. Since there was originally a local ‘Mountaineer’ newspaper, perhaps the Band was sponsored by the newspaper, and assumed its name. The rotunda has survived several floods to become one of Walhalla’s most picturesque and historic landmarks.
