Opposite Tisdall Lodge, on the eastern side of the road, is a strange little cave with an accompanying sign.

In June 1898, Giovanni Guatta (1869 – 1940) from Viano, Switzerland, obtained a colonial wine licence and he and his wife Angelina (née De Luis) operated a wine shop opposite the State School till 1913 (a good choice of site?!).

Giovanni supplemented his income in various ways: supplying wood for the mines, working on the roads, and farming. The family with their 13 children lived in the spacious eight-roomed house which adjoined the shop.

The wine shop’s cellar was dug into the side of the hill, and can still be seen today. One wonders where the large house fitted in ... .
