Surprisingly, the history of the calendar goes back to the Egyptians in 4241 BC, when the Egyptian calendar of 12 months of 30 days each plus five additional days was introduced. While other major civilizations (the Chinese, Chaldean, Babylonian, Greek, Mayan and Jewish) had sophisticated calendars, it was from the Egyptians that the Romans adopted a 24 hour day beginning at midnght, the fixed year, leap years, and a 12 month year. |
