SATELLITE VIEW

 

The satellite view shows the entry to the Cathedral from Priory Hill (arrow, top left).

We see that the axis of the Cathedral is exactly east-west geographically, with the sanctuary at the eastern end. This means that our liturgical directions (for example East with a capital E) coincide exactly with the geographical directions.

The Cathedral is cruciform in shape with a square central tower. Two porches have been added at the Western end, and chapels have been added to the North and South at the Eastern end. The shop and tea rooms abut Priory Hill, and further Cathedral buildings lie South of the Southern porch of the Cathedral.

We shall attempt – unsuccessfully! – to walk right around the Cathedral. We start at the arrow and follow straight across. There is a path, but it does not allow us to come around the Eastern end. So we retrace our steps and follow down past the tea rooms, around the other buildings, to where we can survey the South and East of the Cathedral. Finally we return to the tea rooms, and then into the Cathedral itself.
