Return distance : 7 km; Time : 2.5 hours
Windjana Gorge is a spectacular destination, located on a branch road at a ( relatively! ) short distance from the Gibb River Road, and some 2 hours drive from Derby. It can also be reached from the Fitzroy Crossing road. This is an interesting and easy walk which can be undertaken between May and September. The length depends on how far into the gorge you wish to go!
From the outside we are struck by the 100 metre high limestone cliffs : red cliffs with a dark grey fungus growing on them, and with something of an organ pipe formation.
As we approach more closely to the gorge entrance, we find that the cliffs have their own fascinating local rock formations.
Now things get exciting: we enter the gorge through a secret rock tunnel!
The walking track leads us by still waters ...
... with beautiful reflections. The Lennard River flows through the gorge in the wet season, but for much of the year there are just these residual pools.
Probably not a good place to go swimming, although this resident showed me no animosity.
And all around, striking rock formations and brilliant colour.
This is a wonderful place for walking, sitting and just relaxing. Nature at its best.
