The Stirling Linear Park has three sections. The first is the original Stirling Park with Lake Woorabinda as its focus. Nearby are two other reserves: Hender Reserve and Madurta Reserve, both easily accessed by wlaking tracks. Woorabinda Lake was originally a railway dam, excavated in a natural depression in 1922. It is now the main highlight of the Park and an attractive haven for water birds. Close by is Hender Reserve, proclaimed as a public open space in 1879, but now only a fraction of its original size. The Madurta Reserve was added in 1972. Details of the Park can be found at Where Mabel Street turns into Woorabinda Drive, there is a small parking area. Our three walks will all start from here. Each of these walks contains all or part of the pleasant loop walk around the Lake. Travelling in a clockwise direction we are given a wonderful first impression. Many water birds enjoy this quiet refuge, including (the badly named) black duck, purple swamp hen, and Eurasian coot .. . Across the Lake is a bird hide. Early morning and evening are the best times to view the birds.
The track is an easy, level stroll ... The birdhide has a number of informative and surprising information placards! The last segment of this loop walk is a board walk passing over swampy reed lands.
