CEDARS & GUMS

Today we visit Hans Heysen’s old home, The Cedars, near the town of Hahndorf. We turn off the Freeway at the Hahndorf exit, and follow the signs up the Ambleside Road. There is easy parking at The Cedars.

There is no charge to visit the gallery at the entrance, where there is an extensive range of paintings and memorabilia relating to Hans Heysen and his daughter Nora. Of special interest is the sewing desk, subject of a famous Heysen painting.

Hans Heysen is of course famous for his wonderful paintings
of gum trees, as recorded on an Australian stamp.

We take the paid tour of the old house and surrounding grounds. This includes a visit to Heysen’s outdoor studio, ...

... and a tour through the house itself.

It is also possible to walk the grounds and see the locations from where Heysen painted some of his gum tree scenes. A rest is then in order!

Leaving The Cedars we return to Hahndorf and The Hahndorf Mill where we enjoy a fine buffet lunch.
