SCULPTURES AND STONE

The entry to the Monastery is off Cross Road and is well marked. There is ample parking. We visit the Sacred Garden which lies behind the main building. This is a lovely place with large and beautiful sculptures of the Passion of Christ placed in a garden setting. There is no charge, but donations can be made towards the Garden's upkeep.

We next proceed to McElligot Quarry, one of Adelaide’s secrets. It is accessed off the southern end of Fullarton Road, and again there is plenty of parking space. The main Quarry is now a grassy reserve. Along the eastern side, a rocky cliff face shows clear evidence of once being a seabed. Several signs explain the main features.

At the south-eastern corner of the reserve there is a secret passage!

We pass through a narrow cleft between two rocky cliffs, coming to a hidden glen – another part of the original quarry.

Finally, leaving the Quarry, we drive up the Old Belair Road and so to the Belair Hotel for a fine buffet lunch.

Note: Since we undertook this trip, the restaurant at the Belair Hotel has been rebuilt, and I suspect the eating arrangements have changed.
