Strathalbyn is a lovely country town some 40 km south west of Adelaide. The roads are good, so allow about 45 minutes from Adelaide. The town itself is on two levels: an upper level including High Street which we will investigate in the afternoon, and a lower level around the river park. It is fairly easy to find a roadside parking place near the river. I drive the bus around the town centre indicating points of interest, and then park near the river. We then give the group two hours to go their own way, before meeting back at the Victoria Hotel for lunch. Points of interest include the River Park ... ... Argus House, where there is a coffee shop and an interesting gift shop with a number of old style toys ... ... and a quilting shop near the station with a computer-automated quilting machine. Not to mention various op shops! Strathalbyn also contains a number of interesting historic buildings. We meet for lunch at the Victoria Hotel, where one can order a lunch main course together with buffet salad and vegetables at a very reasonable cost. After lunch we board the bus and drive up past St Andrews Church to Upper Strathalbyn, where we park in a public parking lot on the corner of High and Grey Streets. From here we allow an hour (or two?!) to investigate the adjacent shops, including the old nursery ... ... and various interesting antique shops. |
