WALK IN THORNDON PARK

Thorndon Park is an old reservoir reserve in the north-eastern suburbs, accessed from Stradbroke Road, near where Stradbroke and Gorge Road intersect. There is easy parking, and toilet facilities.

The Thorndon Park Reservoir was constructed between 1857 and 1862 and was the first storage reservoir for Adelaide’s water supply. The Reservoir was decommissioned in 1977 and dedicated as a recreational reserve. In 2001 an irrigation pipe burst, flooding the outlet tunnel and undermining a section of the embankment. The reservoir was then drained to allow further investigation and subsequent repair works.

There is now a large main lake and four smaller dammed lakes with water flowing from one to the next. There is also a system of flowing water in the northern section of the park. Paths with easy gradient allow the visitor to investigate the various features. Near the entrance there is some children’s equipment; during our visit, also a large child!

Our group enjoyed the water features and the walk around the lake.

After leaving the Park, we drive to nearby Teatree Gully where we have lunch at the Civic Park Restaurant. This is a favourite place, on Reservoir Road, and looking out on Civic Park. It has very reasonably priced buffet meals, a large Chinese selection, and excellent desserts!

A very enjoyable easy day spent in good company.
