41. ALTAR DETAIL

AltarDetail

The base of the altar is nicely carved and bears the well known symbols for Christ: Alpha and Omega, and a central IHS symbol. Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, and appear in the Book of Revelation to describe Christ. IHS is a Latinised version of the Greek letters (I)JES – the first three letters of Christ’s name.

42. THE BIBLE

Bible

Christians regard the Bible as the revealed Word of God. The open Bible has a special place in the Lutheran Church.

43. CRUCIFIX

Crucifix

I have come to expect to find a crucifix at the front of each of the Barossa Lutheran churches. The ‘INRI’ sign at the top represents the inscription ordered by Pilate: Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. This crucifix is unusual in that it shows the crucified Christ facing to his left – a rare occurrence. This completes our tour of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
