The next set of three windows commemorate John Barry (1875 – 1938), 4th RC Bishop of Goulburn; Terence McGuire (1881 – 1957), 5th RC Bishop of Goulburn; and Eris O’Brien (1895 – 1974), 1st Archbishop of Canberra – Goulburn. PLAN
The next pages of history! These windows commemorate (from left): Thomas Cahill (1913 – 1978), 3rd RC Bishop of Goulburn; Norman Gilroy (1896 – 1977), 5th RC Archbishop of Sydney; Pope Paul VI (1897 – 1978).
The Blessed Sacrament Chapel is designed to complement the Cathedral itself. We note the central white line, the crucifix, altar and sanctuary lamp, and the icons and tabernacle against the East wall.
The crucifix has the traditional ‘INRI’ at the top, standing for ‘Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews’. The sanctuary lamp is attractive, with the Christogram IHS on the glass, and its light symbolizing the presence of God.
The altar is of Carrera marble carved in Italy, and was installed in 1987. It is modelled on the High Altar in the Basilica of Nazareth, and contains relics of St Bruno and St Thomas Beckett.
Across the back sanctuary wall are two icons: the Virgin Mary and child Jesus at left, and the Risen Christ at right. At centre is the tabernacle, where the reserved elements of the Eucharist are stored.
Across the Cathedral and on the South side are two sacristies. The Bishop’s Sacristy has these windows which commemorate (from left): Francis Carroll (1930 – ), 5th Archbishop of Canberra – Goulburn; Pope John Paul II (1920 – 2005); and Mark Coleridge (1948 – ), 6th Archbishop of Canberra – Goulburn, and RC Archbishop of Brisbane since 2012.
This appears to be a scene from the teaching ministry of Jesus, perhaps in the Temple.
The glorified Christ, with wings or flames, appears (from the tomb?) before the crowd as the earth crumbles.
After the Crucifixion, the body of Christ is laid to rest.
In keeping with the rest of the Cathedral, the crypt has a simple design, with a simple altar against the East wall. Notice the small Stations of the Cross around the walls.
The altar has two menorahs and a tabernacle at centre, with a wooden carved crucifix in modern style above.
The Stations of the Cross are gilded close-up images of the events occurring on Christ’s journey to the Cross.
In the far back corner of the crypt is a Pietà, showing the grieving Mary with the body of the crucified Christ.
The only other items in the crypt are memorials to several Archbishops of Canberra and Goulburn who have died. This is for Terence Bernard McGuire.
The tombstone for Archbishop Eris Michael O’Brien ....
... and for Archbishop Thomas Vincent Cahill ...
... and for Most Rev John Aloysius Morgan, Auxiliary Bishop of Canberra and Goulburn, and Military Vicar of Australia, who died in 2008.
