26A. WEST BALCONY PAINTING

AWBalconyPainting

Turning to the West of the Cathedral, we see a large round wheel window above a simple balcony. In the centre of the balcony balustrade is a painting of Jesus and the Sacred Heart.   PLAN

26B. WEST WINDOW

Finally in our tour of this Cathedral we turn to the round West window. This has the Sacred Heart at its centre, surrounded by images of the twelve disciples. In an outer ring are twelve representative symbols, such as keys (of the Kingdon), a money bag, scrolls, a carpenter’s saw, ... .

The Sacred Heart Cathedral building was opened in 1930 as the parish church of Hamilton and was consecrated by Bishop Edmund Gleeson in 1941, before becoming Sacred Heart Cathedral on July 16, 1995. Because the Church was built during the Great Depression, parishioners helped with the digging of the foundations and the supply of the bricks – 700,000 bricks at twopence each. The architect was Peter Grattan, and the driving force behind the building, Monsignor Victor Francis Peters. Their vision has been confirmed by the still functional Cathedral standing here today. Conclusion

CONCLUSION

I am grateful to the welcomers and the man who turned on the sanctuary lights for me!

I hope you have enjoyed our tour of Sacred Heart Cathedral. After completing a project like this, I am always conscious of things I have missed. Also, on this website, there are some pages where further information could be added. So if you have some favourite photograph or extra information you would like to add here, I would be delighted to hear from you. In particular I would like to add some more historical photos of the Cathedral: these seem to be in short supply.

I am grateful to my wife Margie for some final proof-reading, but if there are any further typos, or factual errors, please feel free to contact me. The best websites are those which contain no errors!
