61. PAINTING AND CRUCIFIX

Painting

The painting is a modern copy of the Madonna of the Grapes by the French artist Pierre Mignard (1612 – 1695). It shows Mary offering grapes to the Infant Jesus. Beneath the painting and behind the altar stands this elegant gold crucifix. The ornamentation below the figure of Christ is unusual.    INDEX

62. SMALL ORGAN AND LECTERN

LadyChapelOrganLectern

At the rear of the Lady Chapel stands a small organ. This was acquired by the Cathedral in 2002 and is the oldest playable organ in Victoria. The little organ was built by Henry Bevington of London in ca 1845–6. The organ remains largely unaltered, retaining its original oak console fittings and draw stops, on square shanks, with copperplate engraving. The lectern eagle is obviously a close relative of the one found in the nave. This one has his eyes fixed straight ahead.

63. NORTHEAST CORNER

ChapelPlaqueMadonna

There are several items in the North East corner of the Chapel. A plaque tells us that the chapel was built with money bequeathed by Jonathan Thomas Bell. Nearby is a wooden crucifix, and on a pedestal in the corner, a statue of Mary holding the baby Jesus.

64. CHAPEL WINDOWS

ChapelWindowE1W

The Lady Chapel has three stained glass windows. The Easternmost window depicts St Etheldreda. These windows are probably the work of Brooks Robinson. Each window depicts a woman of significance in the history of the church. The central window shows St Margaret of Scotland, and was given in memory of Mary Jane Read who died in 1923. The figure in the third Chapel window is St Hilda. St Hilda was responsible for the founding of Whitby Abbey in England, so it is likely that it is the Abbey she is seen holding here.

65. EVANGELISTS I

StMatthewMark

Leaving the Lady Chapel, we come to the South Door and two windows showing St Matthew and St Mark. Traditionally each evangelist is represented by a symbol: here we see an angel (left) and a winged lion (right). [Photo from Cathedral publication]

66. EVANGELISTS II

StLukeJohn

Next to these are the remaining two evangelists, St Luke and St John. Luke is represented by a winged ox (or bull), and John by an eagle. [Photo from Cathedral publication.]

67. HOLY SPIRIT WINDOW

OverSDoor

On the North side of the Cathedral we noticed the Trinity window. This window on the South side forms a pair with that one, the theme here being the Holy Spirit, represented by a white dove.

68. BANNER AND CROSS

BannerEvangelistsPlateIconCross

There are several other small items in this corner of the Cathedral. This banner has the inscription ‘Lone members united in prayer, Diocese Of Wangaratta’. This is a Mothers’ Union banner remembering mothers in areas where there is no active branch of the Mothers’ Union. The little cross obviously has a story, but it is not one with which I am familiar ...

69. HONOUR ROLL

AwardPlaque

Finally we note this small Awards board, remembering those who have given outstanding service to youth in the Diocese of Wangaratta.

70. SOUTH NAVE WINDOWS I, II

SNaveWindowsE1WE2W

This window shows Jesus blessing the children. The inscription is: ‘Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.’ ‘Presented by Ann(i)e Isset in memory of David Isset. Died 26 July 1887.’ The next window shows the widow giving her mite for the Temple. The inscription reads: ‘She hath done what she could.’ This window is in memory of Annie Isset, from her bequest.

71. BANNERS

Banners

Next on the South nave wall is this display of banners with a theme of families and nurturing. Two of them have the MU (Mothers’ Union) symbol.

72. SOUTH NAVE PLAQUE II

SNavePlaqueE3W

This plaque refers to the window above. It shows that the window is given in memory of Anne Isset who died on 16th January 1917. She was a generous benefactor of the Cathedral.

73. SOUTH NAVE wiNDOWS III, IV

SNaveWindowsE3WE4W

The third nave window from the East shows the good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37). It was given in memory of Lilian Emily McDonald who died in 1954, by her husband Arthur. The next window has the theme of Jesus as The Good Shepherd (John 10:1 – 21). Shepherd and sheep are recurring themes in Christian history and imagery.

74. MORE BANNERS

Banners1

The next three displayed banners show organizations associated with the Diocese. Caritas is a Roman Catholic relief organization, and Cursillo is a Roman Catholic leadership training organization.

75. SOUTH NAVE PLAQUE IV

SNavePlaqueE4W

The window above this plaque was given in memory of William Broakes Baker who died in 1944, and his wife Caroline Agnes who died in 1932, by their son John William.

76. NORTH CLERESTORY WINDOWS

NClerestoryWindows

As we leave the nave we notice the high clerestory windows. From left these illustrate Archbishop William Temple, Edward the Confessor, the Venerable Bede, St Augustine and St Columba. [I would be happy to add here good photos of these windows.]

77. SOUTH CLERETORY WINDOWS

SClerestoryWindows

The figures depicted in these windows are (from left): St Alban, St George, Bishop Charles Perry, St Oswald and St Aidan. [I would be happy to add here good photos of these windows.]

78. BAPTISTRY

Baptistry

This charming baptistry lies at the South West corner of the Cathedral.

79. REMEMBRANCE BOOK AND FONT

RemembranceBookFont

As we approach the Baptistry we come to this Remembrance Book, containing the names of those whose ashes are interred in the Garden of Remembrance. A baptismal font is used for the baptism, mostly of small children but even older children, teenagers and adults. Baptism is a Christian rite of admission and adoption into the Christian Church. This font came from St Andrews, Haverstock Hill, London.

80. BAPTISTRY WINDOWS I, II

BaptistryWindowsE1WE2W

There are five windows in the Baptistry. This left-most window is of a boy with offering, given in memory of John Jackson Handley and his wife Alexina. The second window shows the child Timothy receiving instruction from his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois (2 Tim 1:5).
