WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL
HAMPSHIRE, ENGLAND
PAUL SCOTT
SATELLITE VIEW
Winchester is the county town of Hampshire, situated 109 km South West of London. Winchester Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in Europe, having the longest nave and overall length of all Gothic cathedrals in Europe.
We shall use liturgical directions (with the sanctuary at the East end) – near enough to the geographical directions to cause no confusion. We notice that the Cathedral has the traditional cruciform shape, with extra width at the Eastern end. The Cathedral is surrounded by an attractive grassed Close, although Colebrook Street to the East rather intrudes. A shop and cafeteria are situated West of the West wall.
The Cathedral was founded in 1079 and extensively remodelled over the next five centuries by successive bishops. Traces of many different periods and architectural styles remain. The Cathedral was certainly not built all at once! It is a living handbook of the main phases of English church architecture from the 11th century until the early 16th century, when much of today’s building was complete.
At top left we see the foundations of the original Anglo-Saxon Cathedral. Later stages are indicated by the colours on this plan, beginning with the Norman transepts and crypt.
