The Crown and Sceptre Hotel in King William Street was established in 1857. Some more details of its history can be found on the blue plaque. And almost hidden from sight at the top is its beautiful crest.
The present Crown and Sceptre Hotel was built for Alfred Hubble in 1877. It replaced the original Crown and Sceptre Hotel located on the adjoining allotment to the north. The building is not typical of the characteristic form of hotels in the city because of its mid-block position and narrow frontage. It was designed by architects Woods and McMinn, especially noted for their use of repetitive arch forms.
