The first hotel in this area was the Rainbow Tavern, situated immediately east of this building. The first licensee in 1853 was William Sowter, and in 1875 he changed the name to Supreme Court Hotel. The Hotel moved into the present building when it was erected in 1881, and it continued trading until 1970. Little appears to be known about this hotel, although a fire in the Hotel is reported in the Register, 13 July 1898.
The building lay derelict from 1970 until it was restored in anticipation of the opening of Jeffcott Chambers in March 1982.
Jeffcott Chambers takes it name from Sir John Jeffcott, the first judge to be appointed to the Supreme Court of South Australia. Twelve barristers currently practise out of Jeffcott Chambers.
Jeffcott Street and Kermode Street in North Adelaide are named after Sir John Jeffcott and Robert Quayle Kermode, the brother of Jeffcott’s fiancée.
