The Adelaide City Development Plan describes Maxwell Street in the following terms: ‘The close patterning of narrow fronted cottages and row cottages establishes an intimate and cohesive townscape. Consistent roof profiles, parapets and verandahs establish a horizontal built form emphasis.’
This house, sited on part of Town Acre 620, has some distinction in being the narrowest dwelling in the city, measuring only eight feet in width. The house, built for Patrick Tracey in 1880, illustrates the tightly contained character of the south western corner of the city during the 1880s, and is a perfect example of an early slum style dwelling.
–Plaque
The present owners have in fact made this dwelling look very smart. They probably resent the description on the plaque!
