The old lecture hall has some nice decoration. James Atkinson granted the land for this hall to the Belfast Temperance and Philharmonic Society in 1864. The trustees of this society subsequently leased the land to the Mechanics Institute on condition that a stone hall was erected. Sir Thomas Bent made a donation of £500 to the construction fund. The first entertainment held in the hall was on the 5th October 1883. |
