13. THANET TERRACE
36–46 Learmonth Street

Thanet Terrace is a very attractive row of terrace houses, formerly known as Thanet Cottages. Numbers 40—46 were built in 1883–4 by George Admans, and Numbers 36–38 in 1887–88 by Edward Robson and Sons. The houses are notable for their fine ornamental brickwork and chimneys.

Hotelier George Admans purchased these allotments during 1883, the same time as he sold his new Grand Hotel to the Port Phillip Hotel Company. It was a ready investment for his capital and in the same vernacular (coloured brick) as his previous venture, the Grand Hotel (now the Vue Grand).

By 1887 two extra dwellings were added to the northern end, with provision of more extensive rooms to the rear than the previous four. As a sign of the ‘boom times’, the two cottages were bigger and better, as also reflected by the enriched interior decoration.
