15. VUE GRAND HOTEL
46 Hesse Street

Hotel

The Vue Grand Hotel was built in 1881 – 1882 by James Nation and Co, under the direction of architect Watts and Jackson. It has a grand entry, and some wonderful brick detail.

In 1881 Queenscliff’s oldest resident Mr Fox, laid the first brick of what was to become the most extravagant and largest hotel in Queenscliff. The hotel was to rise to three levels. It was built of polychrome brickwork and was estimated to have cost £40,000.

Originally the Grand Hotel possessed three towers, and numerous arched domes set into the roof with extensive use of cast iron. However, after fire in 1927 in the front of the building, the hotel was rebuilt in a contemporary Spanish Mission style, a far cry from its former glory.

The buildings at the rear were relatively untouched, and what remains of the interior is of significant historical value.
