6. LATHAMSTOWE
44 Gellibrand Street

Lathamstowe

Lathamstowe is yet another grand old mansion in Gellibrand Street. It was built in 1882–1883 by Thomas William Dally under the direction of architect William J. Ellis. From a distance the tower stands out; closer we see its beautiful detail. The building features attractive window detailing.

Lathamstowe was the second major building on which Ellis and Dally collaborated. Edward Latham, owner of Carlton Brewery, had Lathamstowe built ‘for the use and benefit of the clergy of the Church of england in the diocese of Melbourne’. It is built as a duplex with two identical stuccoed façades facing Gellibrand and Stokes Streets, linked by the corner tower, and terminated at one end by a semi-octagonal bay. An unusual aspect of the building was its flat lead roof, weighing 20 tons, accessed by a cast iron staircase, designed for promenading and taking in the view.

Externally and internally, the building is near its original form.
