8. WYNDOM |
||
Wyndom was built in 1887 by William Priddle. In that year, the local paper, ‘The Sentinel’ noted ‘one of the prettiest mansions on the cliff is the private residence of Mr W. G. Priddle.’ By the late 1880s and early 1890s Learmonth Street had become a residential street for the builders of the town. This house symbolized the reward for William Priddle’s success as a builder with many building contracts around Queenscliff and in the fortifications of the Heads. This house is of local importance both architecturally and historically. Wyndom is a polychrome (varied) brick house of asymmetrical plan, with a window bay and concave roofed return verandah. Stand alone houses of this style are unusual in Queenscliff, and the polychrome brickwork, which is usually found on hotels, is rarely used in domestic construction. |
