Over the past 18 months, I have been creating historical websites of interesting old towns in South Australia and Victoria. In each case I have walked the streets (in some cases, nearly all the streets!) with my camera at the ready, enjoying and photographing the old buildings and teasing out their historical secrets. It is a hobby which has given me a great deal of pleasure. Creating an Historic Queenscliff website has thus been a natural step to take. During our visit to this fascinating town, I followed the historic walk, and visited the Fort. The Contents list the various pages alphabetically; the page navigation arrows would correspond to a walking tour of the town, starting at TOWN in the Contents. Queenscliff lies at the end of the long narrow Bellarine Peninsular stretching across from the West, and sits at the Heads of Port Philip Bay. The ferry across to Sorrento leaves from here. A map can be seen below. As usual, this site makes no claim to original research. The text relies heavily on the excellent Heritage Walk booklet Queenscliff – A Living History, as well as other sources, and I gladly acknowledge these. The TOWN and FORT pages are straight from Wikipedia (and acknowledged as such). Why recreate something which has been done so well?! All unacknowledged photos on this site are mine, and I am happy for them to be used by others. A simple acknowledgement and link to this site would be appreciated. I hope this site encourages others to explore Queenscliff and enjoy its unique history. If enough people enjoy and value the town’s history, more of the old buildings will be maintained and retained. Then our children will be able to have the same experience! I would be happy to hear from anyone who finds a typo, a link that is not working, or an historical error.
