31. CAUSEWAY

Construction of the Victoria Pier was begin in 1862 and took nearly two years to complete. It was almost 600 yards long and cost about £8800. Even while the Pier was being completed, there was a strong local push for it to be extended to Granite Island.

Owing to increase in trade in the following years, it was decided to continue with the extension, which was completed in 1875. During the progress of the work, great difficulty was experienced in driving piles through the limestone crust of the reef.

Today the causeway marches out to Granite Island, looking impressive from below or above. The original Victoria Pier branched off to the left, part way along the present causeway. The causeway carries pedestrian traffic and the horse-drawn tram before curving onto Granite Island.
