33. MILL HOUSE |
||
Porter Helmore built the mill on sand hills near the Inman River. The machinery, cogs etc were made of wood. It was wrecked by a cyclone and closed down in 1853. It was the first mill in the south. Farmers used to camp in the paddocks waiting for a breeze. This and the Mount Barker Mill are the only wind mills currently known in South Australia. http://www.environment.gov.au/cgi-bin/ahdb/search.pl?mode=place_detail;place_id=7756
The original limestone building was later restored and enlarged, and converted into a private residence. An historic sign is attached to the front wall. |
