6. NEWLAND MEMORIAL CHURCH |

The Newland Memorial Churches are named in memory of Reverend Ridgway Newland, leader of the first group of settlers to Encounter Bay in 1839. He was the first chairman of the District Council of Encounter Bay. The first Newland Memorial Congregational Church was built in 1868. the present Newland Memorial Church in 1927. There is an inscription on the new church which reads ‘To the Glory of God and in memory of the Reverend R. W. Newland and of his son Simpson Newland C. M. G.’ There is also a foundation stone on the old church in loving memory of Rev Chas. Hodge, where a memorial annexe was built. |
