Walhalla is a quaint old gold mining town in Victoria. I suspect it is relatively unknown even to Australians, but it’s definitely worth a visit! The town nestles in a secluded valley near Baw Baw National Park, and lies on a sealed road some 46 km north of the M1 Highway through Morwell and Traralgon. Walhalla is a town with lots of history, and there are many signboards detailing the history of the buildings that remain and describing the buildings that are no longer there. Virtually none of the commentary here is original, but source references are given. The town maps are taken from a publication by the Star Hotel. Some historic old photos are also included, complete with source which I happily acknowledge – mostly the National Library of Australia or the Victorian State Library. I’m also happy to acknowledge the outstanding work of the few active members and many supporters of the Walhalla Heritage and Development League – the current form of the original 1945 Walhalla Improvement League – in preserving and restoring the town, and for installing the trail of durable, informative and attractive heritage signs from one end of the valley to the other. All the photos used here which have no acknowledgment are my own. You are welcome to use these, but please acknowledge the source and add a link to this site. There is a practical issue here. Most photos occur as rollovers, so the particular rollover will need to be selected and then a screenshot taken. In Mac OS this is done by using Command + 3; in Windows use Alt + Prt Scr. An explanation of the main display pages ... . The main photo is changed by rolling the cursor over underlined text. Rolling over the bottom left stickpin reveals a location map; rolling over the green arrow icon reveals some historical information about the building. Clicking on the film scroll reveals an historical photo. Clicking on a navigational arrow will take you to an adjacent page or the Contents page. The Contents page lists the buildings in alphabetical order. The left and right arrow keys on the other pages allow you to traverse the Valley from Dendy’s Cottage in the north to the Valley Railway in the south. I hope you enjoy this website, and will be encouraged to explore this fascinating little town for yourself. If you find any typos, inaccuracies, corrections, I would be happy to hear from you.
