Jacomb's Cottage Walhalla is a charming old style cottage. The cottage replicates one of the outbuildings of the former Jacomb's Criterion Hotel which was originally built in 1867, during the height of gold-mining in the town. The original Criterion Hotel was delicensed in 1913 at the end of the gold-era and demolished soon after.
The Criterion Hotel was built and operated from 1867. It was purchased im 1879 by John and Mary Jacomb who ran the hotel successfully for the next 36 years. Since John was involved in local prospecting, it was Mary who handled the day-to-day operations.
With the decline of the town, the hotel’s licence was revoked in 1913, and photographic evidence shows that the hotel did not survive beyond the mid 1920s.
