TISDALL LODGE |
||
On the western bank of Stringer’s Creek, and just north of the entry to the Long Tunnel Mine workings, we find Tisdall Lodge. This now provides accommodation for visitors [this photo taken from an advertisement], but in former days it played an important part in the life of Walhalla township. In the early days, a school for Walhalla was first opened in the old Mechanics’ Institute building. As the school grew, larger accommodation became necessary, and this site was bought in 1874, and the school built the following year. The main building being occupied by the Head Master, Henry Tisdall, and a present bunk room being used as the school building. The school’s fortunes rose and fell with those of the town, and the school finally closed in 1965. Information about the School can be found on the nearby informative sign. |
