Thales of Miletus

624 560 BC

Thales is credited with having discovered the following mathematical phenomena:

  • A circle is bisected by any diameter.
  • The base angles of an isosceles triangle are equal.
  • The angles between two intersecting straight lines are equal.
  • Two triangles are congruent if they have two angles and one side equal.
  • An angle in a semicircle is a right angle.

Thales was one of the first to prove his concepts by logical reasoning and to look at geometrical figures as abstractions. These two approaches were a step forward from previous mathematics.
