DEPART We leave beautiful Waikare about 8:30, saying goodbye to our chalet,
and the beautiful inlet,
and set off back up the now familiar windy gravel road. We pass the Caves track entrance and descending, stop at the Spillway car park, next to an artificial spillway for when the lake gets too high. This is the far end of the Caves track, but has some special nearby rock attractions of its own: a giant overhanging bluff
which echoes the lapping sounds of the lake far below, and some contrasting vertical rock formations. Driving on, now away from the Lake, we take a side road past the Kaitawa Power Station (there are three of these power stations in sequence below the lake).
At the end of this road is a loop track through bush and around beautiful tranquil Green Lake and Fairey Springs. The track is in need of some maintenance, but we battle on bravely!!
The Green Lake is formed from water seeping through the landslide from Lake Waikare – rather an engineering worry, I should think.
Then back down the river valley with its pretty golden trees, ignoring those rather pathetic little waterfalls (!) which had impressed us so much on the way up. Lunch in Wairoa at the bakery, concludes a very enjoyable couple of days exploring beautiful Lake Waikaremoana. |
