The large communion table is a central feature of the chancel area. From here the Lord’s Supper is administered – bread and wine symbolising the broken body and blood of Jesus, whose life was given for us. On the front of the table we notice the fish symbol, and the capital Alpha and Omega representing Christ. In the background at right stands the organ console.
Wesley’s organ was first constructed in 1908 by J.E. Dodd, enlarged in 1927 and rebuilt in 1992 – 94. It consists of 35 ranks of pipes, 2,800 in all. The console (keyboard) is located on the opposite side of the chancel to the pipes. Notice how the wooden canopy above the pipes is the natural structure of the transept on this side. This has been covered over on the South side.
Finally we come to the East window, with its matching banners indicating the path to the Cross. Below the window is the high altar which has been preserved from past times, but is no longer used by the present congregation. These windows are called the Shenton windows, and were given in memory of members of the Shenton family, loyal supporters of Western Australian Methodism in the early days. The three-lancet window shows Jesus as the Good Shepherd at centre, with Jesus and the children and Jesus healing to the sides. This completes our tour of Wesley Uniting Church.
I hope you have enjoyed visiting Wesley Uniting Church with me. I really photographed this Church by accident, coming across it unexpectedly while walking through Perth city. What a good find!
I am happy to receive constructive comments or corrections concerning this website. The best websites are the ones which have no errors! I am grateful to my wife Margie who came to Perth with me, and who has proof-read these pages.
Once again I express my gratitude to my son-in-law Nathan Henry who took a number of photos on this site. These have been labelled NH in the titles. The remaining photographs here are all mine except where indicated in the text. I take little credit for the text which is drawn from a variety of sources. In particular, the Church walk-through notes have been very helpful.
