41. CHAPEL NORTH ALCOVE

WChapelNAlcoveListCross

The North chapel contains the other prayer desk. On the back wall is a framed list of Assistant Curates of St David’s between 1960 and 2009. On the West wall of this alcove is an aumbry designed by Voitre Marek. This is a locked safe for storing the reserved Elements of the Eucharist. Allusions to the Eucharistic wafer and the Cross can be seen here in the design.    INDEX

42. LADY CHAPEL BRASS AND WINDOW

WindowBrassandBellpull

On the South side of the Lady Chapel altar is a copper panel and a lovely stained glass window. In the panel, Pilate washes his hands at the trial of Jesus. In the Gospel account, Pilate washes his hands as a symbol of taking no blame for Jesus being condemned to death. By this action Pilate shows his cowardice and fear of the mob (Matthew 27:24-26). This sculpture is again the work of Marek Voitre.

43. LADY CHAPEL WINDOW

The stained glass window in the Lady Chapel is entitled ‘Suffer the little children to come unto me’. It was made by Montgomery and Grimbley of Adelaide and Melbourne in 1906, and was originally in the Old Church. It was later mounted alongside the high altar in the New Church, and was transferred to the Lady Chapel on completion of the windows by Cedar Prest.

44. LADY CHAPEL ALTAR

ChapelAltar

The altar from the old church, given in memory of the late Robert W Kingsborough who died in 1903, was installed in the Lady Chapel.

45. LADY CHAPEL REREDOS

ChapelReredos

Behind the altar in the Lady Chapel is a beautifully carved but restrained black reredos. It serves as a very effective backdrop for various candles, the flower arrangements and the central gold Cross. This Cross stands on another aumbry designed and built by Voitre Marek. A brass plaque is covered by the base of the Cross. The reredos has various inscriptions (from left): ‘Alpha’ (the Beginning), ‘ihs’ (the first letters of the name ‘Jesus’ in Latinised Greek), ‘Chi-Rho’ (the first letters of ‘Christ’ in Greek), and ‘Omega’ (the End). ‘Alpha and Omega’ is a name for Christ found in the book of Revelation.

46. LADY CHAPEL CROSS

We conclude our visit to St David’s Church with a contemplation of the Lady Chapel Cross. The red lamp indicates the presence of blessed Eucharistic Elements in the aumbry below. This completes our tour of St David’s Church.
