The Mechanics’ Institute was erected on land given for the purpose by James Atkinson. The building was partly completed in 1865, added to in 1869, and finally finished in 1871. Its total cost was a little over £500. After renovations in 1984, it became the Port Fairy branch of the Corangamite Regional Library.

Architecturally it has different window treatments from the adjacent Lecture Hall, but shares the crenellated effect under the roof line.
