CEMETERY

Cemetery2

Just south of the Lodge Hotel, a steep little zig-zag road heads up the hill to the old cemetery. The cemetery itself is on a steep hillside, and some 1300 people are buried here. It is interesting to investigate some of the old grave stones, many of which lament life in old Walhalla. Conditions were tough, and being a miner was a hazardous occupation.

The cemetery has been used since 1865. The unusual site would have been chosen to ensure that the graves were not affected by flooding of the stream. However, any relatives visiting the graves would have needed to be in good physical condition!

Near the entry to the cemetery is an informative sign. There is also a plaque about the old police station which was once situated near here.
