RAILWAY STATION

Station

The old railway station is a highlight of any visit to Walhalla, especially if it is combined with a ride on the train! In this case you will buy your ticket from the station mistress, tucked away behind her counter.

Construction of the Moe–Walhalla railway began in 1904, but was not completed until 1910 due to the difficult mountainous terrain. It had been hoped that construction of the railway would save the town which was already in decline with the gold mining operation becoming unviable. However, this was not to be: the largest gold mining operation closed in 1914.

Across the road is an informative plaque about the large waterwheel which was once sited there on the creek.
