CRICKET GROUND

WalhallaCricketGround

Even in a busy town like old Walhalla, sport was an important component, but where to play? There was almost no available land in the township, so the locals looked to the hills. They laboriously cleared and ‘levelled’ the land on top of a nearby hill, 200 metres above the valley, forming a sporting reserve. This became a popular venue for townspeople, and is still maintained today.

Steps up to the cricket ground start from the Valley Road, and there is an information plaque there. [I cannot locate the source of the ‘steps’ photo.]

Not for the faint hearted, it is a 45 minute return walk. The ground itself is neither level nor smooth: in fact the golfing term ‘in the rough’ comes to mind!

There are some good stories about competitive cricket matches held here in the old days.
