TRAMWAY

TramTrack

Up the hill a little way on the western side of the valley is the Walhalla Alpine Trail – a walkway between Mt Baw Baw and Walhalla.  The trail follows the first 40 km section of the Australian Alps Walking Track. But just above Walhalla, it follows the historic old tramway.

This was constructed in 1866 to covey firewood for engines and domestic use over a distance of one mile, as timber became scarce closer to the township. I was also told that the tramway was used to convey gold to waiting bullock carts for transport out of the valley.

It is worth making the short climb up to the old tramway – a pleasant walk, and views across the town. For example, we can see the band rotunda and surrounds, and also the Chronicle building and Corner Store.

There are old photos of Walhalla that show several different ‘tramways’ which have not survived.
