The sanctuary banners on either side of the East window are interesting and original. They illustrate the verse: ‘Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever’ (Hebrews 13:8) with pictures of the Langmeil Church with congregational members in appropriate dress. Bottom panels emphasise the Elements of the Eucharist and the open Bible.
The finely carved altar has three front panels bearing the IHS Christogram at center (the I having a cross-bar), and the Greek letters Alpha and Omega to the sides – the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, referring to Christ being the Beginning and the End (Revelation 22:13).
The open Bible and the Crucifix regularly appear on the altars of the Valley Lutheran churches. They emphasise the basic Lutheran beliefs relating to the Bible being the Word of God, and Christ dying on the Cross for the redemption of his people. There is a reminder here too, that although Martin Luther is credited with initiating the changes that resulted in the formation of the Protestant denominations, Luther and the Lutheran Church remained very much within the Anglo-Catholic tradition.
In the East wall of the sanctuary is this wonderful window showing the ascended and victorious Christ. This completes our tour of Langmeil Lutheran Church.
I hope you have enjoyed visiting Langmeil Lutheran Church with me. This is one of the major Lutheran churches in the Barossa Valley, and it has been a great pleasure visiting it.
I particularly want to acknowledge the assistance given to me by Colleen Bryan of Langmeil in this whole project of photographing the Barossa Lutheran churches – her help was way beyond the call of duty, and much appreciated,
