C11. SECOND NORTH-SOUTH CROSS AISLE
From our central position we look Southwards along the second North-South aisle. Various monuments line the walls, and Bishop Heber stands beneath the far window.
This marble monument to Bishop Reginald Heber is by Sir Francis Chantrey. It was originally in St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kolkata (Calcutta), India, but was moved to St. Paul’s in 1847. This view was before he relocated to the crypt! Reginald Heber (1783-1826) was the second Bishop of Calcutta. He is best known today for his famous hymns, including ‘Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty’, ‘From Greenland’s icy mountains’, ‘Brightest and best of the sons of the morning’ and ‘Lord of mercy and of might’.
