A plaque on the side of the tomb gives the dates of the Duke: BORN . MAY I, MDCCLXIX (1769) ; DIED .SEPT XIV, MDCCCLII (1852). Notice too the flat memorial plaques around this space, and extending further.
Moving around the tomb, we notice its general symmetry.
The other long side has the inscription: ‘ARTHUR, DUKE OF WELINGTON’.
Close by is this memorial to Viscount Montgomery of Alamein KG (1887 – 1976). Bernard Law Montgomery, KG, GCB, DSO, PC, DL, nicknamed ‘Monty’ and ‘The Spartan General’, was a senior British Army officer who served in the First World War, the Irish War of Independence and the Second World War.
