C16. NELSON’S TOMB

A plaque on the side of the tomb gives the dates of the Duke: BORN . MAY I, MDCCLXIX (1769) ; DIED .SEPT XIV, MDCCCLII (1852). Notice too the flat memorial plaques around this space, and extending further.
The floor monument in the foreground covers the grave of Admiral of the Fleet John Rushworth Jellicoe, 1st Earl Jellicoe (1935). He fought in the Anglo Egyptian War, the Boxer Rebellion and commanded the Grand Fleet at the Battle of Jutland in 1916 during Word War I. He became First Sea Lord before being relieved of his post at the end of 1917. In the 1920's he became Governor General of New Zealand. [Photo Credit: Church Monuments Gazetteer]
