E8. NORTH PORTAL DETAILS
The tympanum of the central door shows as its main central scene, the Coronation of the Virgin. Below on the lintel are two scenes: at left the Dormition of the Virgin (the falling asleep – death – of Mary), and the Assumption of the Virgin (taking up into Heaven). The surmounting arch shows the Tree of Jesse at left and the Prophets at right. The jamb figures (partly shown) are Old Testament Prophets, John the Baptist and St Peter.
The lintel scenes show a slightly unusual Nativity scene and the Visit of the Shepherds. Above in the tympanum is the Adoration of the Magi, and the dream of the Magi (at right – asleep in a heap as God warns them to return homa another way). The surmounting arch shows personifications of Virtues and Vices, and the door jambs show the Annunciation to Mary and the Visitation to Elizabeth.
The right tympanum shows Job on the dunghill. The lintel scene below depicts the judgement of Solomon – the incident of two women claiming a small child. Not shown here are the Old Testament narratives (Esther, Judith, Samson, Gideon and Tobit) shown on the arches, and the jamb figures of King Solomon, the Queen of Sheba, and various prophets.
Traditionally St Anne is the mother of Mary, and she is shown here holding her daughter. It is curious that Mary’s head remains missing. [Photo Credit: Wikipedia-Harmonia Amanda]
